Earl grey is black tea scented with the oil from the rind of bergamot oranges. Bergamot is a citrus tree mostly found on the coast of Italy and southern France. The rinds’ fragrant oil is added to black tea to give Earl Grey its signature zesty punch.
The first reference of Earl Grey tea was around 1820’s, and it was linked with the idea of using bergamot to enrich the taste of low-quality black tea. Earl Grey is most often connected to the English aristocrat and Prime Minister Charles Grey. There are frequent stories linked with the establishments of the style we all know as Earl Grey tea.
